Description
1799 Draped Bust Dollar, PCGS VF35, struck 5% off center to the right. All early dollar errors are rare, just try to find one and see how tough it is! There are a handful of off-center Draped Bust dollars known to exist and occasionally one comes to market. This one is exceptionally nice in hand and clearly presents as an off-center strike of about 5%. The tips of the stars on the obverse right are off planchet, as are the tops of the letters on the corresponding area of the reverse legend. The coin is toned a very pleasing medium grey and is well struck on both sides (except for the centering error). It's in an older PCGS gradient holder. I was able to find two auction records for this coin, one in 2009 (where is was repurchased by the consigner) and another in 2014 where it sold for 90. The value of off-center early dollars increases dramatically as the degree of error increases, so this seems like a good price point for the 5% off-center error and the VF35 grade. There are a few really neat Bust Dollar errors out there; I've seen images of an undated example struck significantly off center at 6:00 and another that is double struck with the 2nd strike 15% off center. I haven't located a sales history of the first, but the second has an auction history in excess of k and a private sale that I'm sure was far above that figure. I also have available a 1799 Draped Bust Dollar struck 10% off center and graded VF30 by NGC; it is at a significantly higher price point than this offering.
